Frida-Inspired Greenhouse Vibes

A banging bridal inspiration shoot, set in the tropical greenhouses of Writtle College.

Hey! Jenna here! I don’t think I’ve ever been this excited about blogging a shoot before. Sure, I may be biased as this concept was the brainchild of me as part of my other business, Wonderland Invites, but even if it wasn’t my concept…I think it would still be up there with the most exciting, bad-ass, spine-tingling shoots I’ve seen out there for a long time.

I love a styled shoot, and I tend to plan 4-6 a year. I know how hard they are to pull off and that every single detail is always meticulously thought out. Providing couples with amazing inspiration is a huge factor in the thought processes of the suppliers involved. Luckily, I had a bloody brilliant team on board with me for this baby, and you know what, they killed it…

The Premise

I guess where it started for this concept was a photoshoot that Karen from Rock The Frock curated back in 2017. It took place in the greenhouse at Writtle College; a working university dedicated to agriculture and horticulture. Ever since working on that shoot with Karen, I have wanted to shoot in the greenhouses there.

I love all things green, lush and cactus-filled – greenhouses are life, amirite? I am also a lover of beautiful Moroccan homeware, and the goddess herself Frida Khalo. In fact, I remember studying her work in GCSE Art, and since then, I just love the colourful nature of her work. So, essentially, this shoot was a pooling of different inspirations into one beautifully bohemian, colour popping shoot!

Styling

I always need to have my right-hand women shooting with me; the amazing Laura and Alex from Rock The Day Styling and Amy from Anthology Vintage Hire. They just ‘get’ my concepts and truly elevate every aspect of every shoot I have conceptualised with their amazing hire items, furniture and eye for styling. Alex had spray-painted a peacock chair black and I was itching to use it; I knew it would fit with the styling for this shoot.

Alongside reclaimed trestle tables and chairs, Amy lent her beautiful tan Chesterfield chair and her amazing new triangular arch, which the amazing Rebecca from Velvet Rose Flower Studio adorned with bang-on-trend anthurium, orchids and trailing amaranthus.

Assisting Laura and Alex was Shelley of The Neon Finca. Shelley travels to Morocco periodically to pick up amazing homeware items to stock her shop, which we incorporated into the styling of the shoot. Her gorgeous kilim cushions provided beautiful pops of colour around the peacock chair seating area, and her woven placemats gave extra depth to the tablescape, which Laura and Alex decorated with beautiful candles, glassware and bowls filled with fruit.

The Fashion

Dresses were lent by Karen of Rock The Frock and included items by Otaduy, Zetterberg, Chantelle Lauren and a jumpsuit by Velvet Hearts. I also lent an additional gown from Shikoba following a shoot we worked on together in Morocco. We mixed and matched looks on the models Shona and Louise, and added a beautiful leather jacket by Back Chat Designs for some extra sass and oomph.

Zoe from Knot Your Average Bride provided hair and makeup services; Zoe, alongside her work as a wedding HMUA, also works with a lot of fashion brands, so her eye for fashion and elevating a look was paramount. We wanted to create some edgier looks, and her amazing work definitely took us there. She was assisted on the day by CLB Hair.

Zoe also helped guide which hairpieces and jewellery would work best with which looks – we had a beautiful array of items to use from Black + Sigi, ASOS and Gypsy Rose Vintage, alongside a real flower crown created by Rebecca and a stunning floral embroidered veil from Sash & Veil.

Stationery & Cake

For the stationery, I must have spent hours of downtime working on the concept. It took ages to get right…something didn’t click at the start so I started over a good few times! I decided to incorporate a tile pattern which kinda gave me the kickstart I needed to take the design to a better place.

I always use separate inserts for shoots as they are easier to photograph, but as I was there on the day to help style, I decided to breathe life into one of my best-selling formats; the concertina design. I opted for bright colours and complemented the design with bright envelopes and tassels to add texture. You can see more of my stationery work here.

When I asked Sarah of Tiny Sarahs Cakes to provide the cake, I knew I had to provide a colourful, interesting brief as she just doesn’t do standard cakes. She’s consistently raising the roof of the cake game in the UK with her amazing, detailed and super-creative designs, so I was thrilled she said yes! And she didn’t disappoint!

The Flowers

If you want super cool, bang-on-trend flowers in Essex, then there’s nobody better than Rebecca of Velvet Rose Flower Studio. She’s colourful, bohemian, edgy and luxe all rolled into one, and she creates the most awesome displays.

For this shoot, Rebecca played homage to the greenhouses with grasses, palms, anthurium, orchids and beautiful trailing amaranthus. She hit the nail on the head with the triangular backdrop, busting a gut to get the frame looking absolutely spot on and well-balanced.

The Models & The Photographer

I’d worked with Louise Parker previously on a shoot at Browning Brothers, and she’s an uber professional model; on time, knows her poses and is such a warm personality to have on set. I found Shona’s profile and instantly knew I wanted her to join us…not only are her brows absolute perfection, but she’s equally pro and ridiculously sweet. Both ladies were amazing to have on set.

And lastly…Megs of Megan Elle Photography. What can I say. Megan is a true talent, a real sweetheart and a brilliant director. I knew this shoot was going to be special but upon receiving the images from Megs following the day, I was in awe. Not only did she capture every detail perfectly but she also captured loads of lovely behind the scenes shots of the team working hard.

From the bottom of my heart, I want to thank every single supplier involved in this shoot. You are all incredible. If you are getting married in the South East of England, then these are the suppliers you should be booking for your big day.

From City to Cliffside

This stunning shoot by Nick Nguyen combines the best of the city with the wilds of nature.

We’re back, back, back again, and what a shoot to return on. Another gorgeous feature from the immensely talented Nikk Nguyen, this stunning shoot combines the best of the city with the wilds of nature.

“Being an Austin, Texas wedding photographer means you need to know the best spots in town that will offer inspiration to those preparing for their big day. That’s why I chose the locations you’ll see in this urban and cliffside boho styled shoot. It’s definitely another incredible inspiration shoot on the books and one that didn’t disappoint in the least! It was loads of fun to put together and even more fun to photograph and with all of the roaming around the city, this became the first shoot where I’ve actually needed a dedicated assistant just to carry my bag! Needless to say, there was a lot of walking involved!” Nikk

The team kicked off this epic shoot by hijacking the lobby of the Driskill Hotel to get ready. From the hotel, they started their trek throughout the city snapping photos all along the way. Despite being a super hot day to be out and about, the team were dedicated to producing the best shoot possible and we totally agree that they succeeded!

For the last part of the shoot, the team headed to Mount Bonnell to capture some breathtaking cliffside ceremony shots.

“I wanted to make sure we incorporated the sunset and I knew this was the place to do it! After getting some heart-stopping ceremony images we finished off the shoot by popping a bottle of champagne and drinking to another successful boho wedding inspiration shoot!” Nikk

Aegean Rue de Seine at Laguna Gloria

We’re loving these beautiful couple portraits and the focus on the stunning Rue de Seine dress.

What do you get when you cross the boho Rue De Seine dress of your dreams, with a swish grooms suit from Bonobos? Well, this inspiration shoot, that’s what! Submitted by the wonderful Nikk Nguyen, and shot at Laguna Gloria, we’re loving the beautiful couple portraits and the focus on the gorgeous, intricate details of the stunning Rue de Seine dress.

“Pulling this shoot off was a dream for me as a wedding photographer. Laguna Gloria is one of the most beautiful venues in Austin, Texas and I’ve been looking forward to this boho inspiration shoot for a long time now. To say that I’m happy to see the finished product couldn’t be more of an understatement; I’m ecstatic! This shoot had all the feels, soft, romantic and edgy all in one and to be able to capture it during sunset was a dream come true!” Nikk

Nikk explains that the inspiration for this shoot was ‘a piece of cake’ thanks to the Aegean-inspired gown from Rue De Seine. From the fringe details to the intricate lace patterns, the team were passionate about capturing the dress somewhere as natural, free-flowing and bold as the dress itself and what better place than Laguna Gloria!

“Our stylist and coordinator, Lynsie from Pearl Events, was an absolute master at pulling everything together. I was an awe watching how she took a captivating idea and turned it into a beautiful reality. Everything from the florals, to the tablescape, to the venue itself was an integral part that made this shoot work!” Nikk

Dark & Stormy Feels in Brighton

Dark and stormy shoot, with a touch of sleek glamour; a different take on the bohemian trend

A different vibe for todays styled shoot…dark and stormy with a touch of sleek glamour, whilst still embracing some of the hallmarks of the bohemian trend; beautiful, abundant florals, gorgeous styling and oodles of special little touches.

Led by Emily Dall, a florist based in the UK, the shoot took place at the moody, emotive pub, The Pond in Brighton and incorporated a stellar lineup including the uber talented Bunston Bakes and Wed in The Wild favourites, Lo & Behold Bespoke.  We absolutely LOVE it!

Emily explains more…

“Our Dark & Stormy shoot is the achingly beautiful bohemian marriage of darkness with romance. A love which almost certainly began on a brooding autumn day and which is so overpowering that you could describe yourself as ‘utterly intoxicated’ with your partner.”

Emily chose the rich colours of teal & burgundy to offer alternative autumnal hues and provide a contrast with both the fluttering candlelight & the stunning ivory Ossie Clark-inspired dress.

” As an autumn lover, I have always adored a brooding, dark colour palette and I thrive on cinematic styling & drama. As a result, I would say there was certainly a subtle combination of inspiration from the album The Bride by Bat for Lashes, my lifelong love of Wuthering Heights (the ultimate moody & windswept romance on the moors!) and the Instagram feed of Susie Bick, Nick Cave’s wife.

Shooting an autumnal wedding in June wasn’t not easy but the team were ‘blessed’ with a moody weather forecast on the day which was ideal…no sunlight pouring through the windows to pull the tone away from the mood the team wanted to portray.

ThePond-79

ThePond-25

As always, we love to ask about the submitter about their favourite aspect of the shoots and for Emily, it was a hard choice (and we can see why).

“The tablescape came together just as I hoped it would, with the huge peonies & wild roses perfectly interlacing the elegantly ornate brass candlesticks, but when Ami from Lo & Behold hung the hand-painted banner on the wall behind it was just the cherry on top! Receiving those images back from Paloma made my heart sing. Also, if I may mention one other aspect, Arabella went to the trouble of mixing a bespoke lip colour on the day of the shoot to match the rich burgundy colour of the peonies. This attention to detail is everything I adore in wedding design & styling.”

Our Top Five Boho Wedding Designers

We recommend some of our favourite boho designers; think fringes, tassels and intricate laces.

I think every woman dreams about their wedding day. And of course, dreams evolve and change over the course of time, affected by a number of factors; where we live, who we befriend, places we travel, our careers. But one thing remains prominent in the wedding planning within our minds…the dress.

Arguably, one of the most talked about aspects of any brides day is what they wear to walk down the aisle. A whole concept can be conceived and designed around one garment, so it’s pretty important that the right dress is chosen.

Here at Wed in The Wild, we are suckers for a beautiful dress…we’re certainly not shy about loving an over the top, full-on fringed, embellished, bohemian style wedding dress. And we’re certainly not averse to colour either. We’ve scoured the internet, poured over Instagram and subsequently pined for these beautiful bohemian beauties from the lushest designers out there…

Rue de Seine

The bomb diggy of bohemian dresses; Rue de Seine serves up a veritable platter of full-on boho garms for the most wild and free of brides.

Think fringes, embellishments, lace and tassels…there are quite literally too many designs to swoon over within their three collections; Moonlight Magic, Wild Heart and Classics. Our favourites include the Adara, the Ziggy and the Dakota.

Take the Sol dress for example, with its dreamy leaf detail armbands and scooped back. The Coco design harks to Spain, with frills and detail which wouldn’t look out of place on a traditional Flamenco dancer. It looks completely and beautifully romantic.
