Frida-Inspired Greenhouse Vibes

A banging bridal inspiration shoot, set in the tropical greenhouses of Writtle College.

Hey! Jenna here! I don’t think I’ve ever been this excited about blogging a shoot before. Sure, I may be biased as this concept was the brainchild of me as part of my other business, Wonderland Invites, but even if it wasn’t my concept…I think it would still be up there with the most exciting, bad-ass, spine-tingling shoots I’ve seen out there for a long time.

I love a styled shoot, and I tend to plan 4-6 a year. I know how hard they are to pull off and that every single detail is always meticulously thought out. Providing couples with amazing inspiration is a huge factor in the thought processes of the suppliers involved. Luckily, I had a bloody brilliant team on board with me for this baby, and you know what, they killed it…

The Premise

I guess where it started for this concept was a photoshoot that Karen from Rock The Frock curated back in 2017. It took place in the greenhouse at Writtle College; a working university dedicated to agriculture and horticulture. Ever since working on that shoot with Karen, I have wanted to shoot in the greenhouses there.

I love all things green, lush and cactus-filled – greenhouses are life, amirite? I am also a lover of beautiful Moroccan homeware, and the goddess herself Frida Khalo. In fact, I remember studying her work in GCSE Art, and since then, I just love the colourful nature of her work. So, essentially, this shoot was a pooling of different inspirations into one beautifully bohemian, colour popping shoot!

Styling

I always need to have my right-hand women shooting with me; the amazing Laura and Alex from Rock The Day Styling and Amy from Anthology Vintage Hire. They just ‘get’ my concepts and truly elevate every aspect of every shoot I have conceptualised with their amazing hire items, furniture and eye for styling. Alex had spray-painted a peacock chair black and I was itching to use it; I knew it would fit with the styling for this shoot.

Alongside reclaimed trestle tables and chairs, Amy lent her beautiful tan Chesterfield chair and her amazing new triangular arch, which the amazing Rebecca from Velvet Rose Flower Studio adorned with bang-on-trend anthurium, orchids and trailing amaranthus.

Assisting Laura and Alex was Shelley of The Neon Finca. Shelley travels to Morocco periodically to pick up amazing homeware items to stock her shop, which we incorporated into the styling of the shoot. Her gorgeous kilim cushions provided beautiful pops of colour around the peacock chair seating area, and her woven placemats gave extra depth to the tablescape, which Laura and Alex decorated with beautiful candles, glassware and bowls filled with fruit.

The Fashion

Dresses were lent by Karen of Rock The Frock and included items by Otaduy, Zetterberg, Chantelle Lauren and a jumpsuit by Velvet Hearts. I also lent an additional gown from Shikoba following a shoot we worked on together in Morocco. We mixed and matched looks on the models Shona and Louise, and added a beautiful leather jacket by Back Chat Designs for some extra sass and oomph.

Zoe from Knot Your Average Bride provided hair and makeup services; Zoe, alongside her work as a wedding HMUA, also works with a lot of fashion brands, so her eye for fashion and elevating a look was paramount. We wanted to create some edgier looks, and her amazing work definitely took us there. She was assisted on the day by CLB Hair.

Zoe also helped guide which hairpieces and jewellery would work best with which looks – we had a beautiful array of items to use from Black + Sigi, ASOS and Gypsy Rose Vintage, alongside a real flower crown created by Rebecca and a stunning floral embroidered veil from Sash & Veil.

Stationery & Cake

For the stationery, I must have spent hours of downtime working on the concept. It took ages to get right…something didn’t click at the start so I started over a good few times! I decided to incorporate a tile pattern which kinda gave me the kickstart I needed to take the design to a better place.

I always use separate inserts for shoots as they are easier to photograph, but as I was there on the day to help style, I decided to breathe life into one of my best-selling formats; the concertina design. I opted for bright colours and complemented the design with bright envelopes and tassels to add texture. You can see more of my stationery work here.

When I asked Sarah of Tiny Sarahs Cakes to provide the cake, I knew I had to provide a colourful, interesting brief as she just doesn’t do standard cakes. She’s consistently raising the roof of the cake game in the UK with her amazing, detailed and super-creative designs, so I was thrilled she said yes! And she didn’t disappoint!

The Flowers

If you want super cool, bang-on-trend flowers in Essex, then there’s nobody better than Rebecca of Velvet Rose Flower Studio. She’s colourful, bohemian, edgy and luxe all rolled into one, and she creates the most awesome displays.

For this shoot, Rebecca played homage to the greenhouses with grasses, palms, anthurium, orchids and beautiful trailing amaranthus. She hit the nail on the head with the triangular backdrop, busting a gut to get the frame looking absolutely spot on and well-balanced.

The Models & The Photographer

I’d worked with Louise Parker previously on a shoot at Browning Brothers, and she’s an uber professional model; on time, knows her poses and is such a warm personality to have on set. I found Shona’s profile and instantly knew I wanted her to join us…not only are her brows absolute perfection, but she’s equally pro and ridiculously sweet. Both ladies were amazing to have on set.

And lastly…Megs of Megan Elle Photography. What can I say. Megan is a true talent, a real sweetheart and a brilliant director. I knew this shoot was going to be special but upon receiving the images from Megs following the day, I was in awe. Not only did she capture every detail perfectly but she also captured loads of lovely behind the scenes shots of the team working hard.

From the bottom of my heart, I want to thank every single supplier involved in this shoot. You are all incredible. If you are getting married in the South East of England, then these are the suppliers you should be booking for your big day.

Our Top Boho Trends for 2019

We have collated all of our favourite boho trends for 2019 into one insane list…

We personally cannot wait for 2019; with so many amazing trends which lend themselves so perfectly to bohemian dry-hire and outdoor weddings, couples will be quite literally spoilt for choice. And we cannot wait to see how some of these big-hitting trends fit into people’s special day.

Here at Wed in The Wild, we aim to bring only the best inspiration to you, which is why we have collated all of our favourite trends into one insane top trend list…

Australasian-Style Grazing

Fast becoming a show-stopping feature at weddings and events, Australasian-style grazing is set to grow even more in 2019. Gone are the days of afternoon tea and beige buffets, theses insane works of art add colour, texture and taste to your big day.

G&F2

And whether you want to include an iconic grazer instead of canapés, or have it replace your wedding breakfast or evening banquet, there is only really one company in the UK that you should be contacting…Grape & Fig.

Dried Flowers & Foliage

As much as we love flowers in any form, we are loving the textures that dried flowers bring to the table; especially big palms and grasses. Mix dried flowers with fresh flowers to create a gorgeous contrast, or go all out and utilise just dried flowers in your bouquet, ceremony arch or flower crown.

Be sure to speak to your florist well in advance for the possibilities available to you for your wedding date.

Illustrated Stationery

Some say that stationery is a waste of money, but we beg to differ. It may be paper, but there is a world of opportunity available, especially if you opt for a bespoke design. Illustrated stationery is on the rise as more and more couples understand the importance of a good stationery suite, and how the right design can set the tone for your whole day.

Why not ask your stationer to include an illustration personal to you, like your wedding venue, parts of your decor, a portrait of you both or even a map detailing your wedding day and all it’s little details.

Eco Weddings

In a world which is under threat from pollution and global warming, many couples are interested in how they can ensure their wedding is more eco-friendly and ethical.

There are so many ways you can help; from choosing to hire rather than buy, choosing second hand or reclaimed over new, utilising small businesses over mass-production large-scale companies, utilising bio-degradable cutlery and crockery, and of course, ensuring all waste is recycled at the end of your day.

AVH3

Anthology Vintage Hire has all the reclaimed/vintage furniture you need for your day.

Check out some more tips and tricks here.

Statement backdrops

OK, so backdrops aren’t anything new, but over the past couple of years we’ve seen a huge rise in big-ass statement backdrops in bohemian weddings. And this year has seen a sharp incline in wooden and multi-textural backdrops in particular…a trend we see continuing into 2019.

From geometric and tribal patterns, to swathes of hand-dyed linens, tassels, macrame and beading,  make a statement backdrop part of your big day and give your guests an altar to really talk about!

Big Jewellery and Crowns

When we say big…we mean big. Gone are the days of flower crowns…there we said it…statement jewellery is set to be all the range for 2019 and beyond.

From earrings and rings to intricate, mind-blowing crowns, there are some amazing brands, like Verbena Madrid and Opal Milk, which are paving the way for beautiful statement bridal jewellery that is different to the usual stuff you see on ASOS.

Real Wedding: Kelly & Erik

The attention to detail and raw emotion at this perfect destination wedding will be sure to capture your heart.

Wow. Just wow. That was our first reaction to seeing this beautiful real wedding shot by Anna Hayes of Hazography. Set in Roatan, Honduras, amongst palm fronds, birds of paradise and a whole lotta love, the attention to detail and raw emotion at this perfect destination wedding will be sure to capture your heart.

Anna explains more…

“I never met Kelly and Erik in person until I flew to Honduras for their wedding. This was my first destination wedding so I was totally nervous that it was too good to be true – that they were too good to be true. Then I met them and we were instant friends. They invited my boyfriend and I to their welcome BBQ and we all went out for drinks afterwards. It was a freakin’ blast. The whole weekend we were treated like family. If all my clients could be like that, I would be in photographer heaven.”

“The love. It was all there. Everyone in the bridal party was so stoked to be there. They helped the bride with everything. Hell, they helped me with everything – including removing a closet door to get sweet photos with it. The bride is 100% fluent in Spanish as it is her second language, but in the midst of the wedding day rush, she had ‘bride brain’ so she just could not find the words! So, her girls took up the slack and helped her communicate with the vendors. It was such a show of love.”

Anna describes how the day went swimmingly for the most part…there weren’t any photography challenges in terms of lighting, posing or otherwise. However, she did experience one of the most heart-stopping moments we think a photographer could ever experience! Whilst she was backing up some of her SD cards, her case slipped out of her pocket!

“All the SD cards scattered on the slotted deck flooring! The groom was right there freaking out along side of me. Luckily, none of the cards slipped through the cracks, but Erik was ready to take a drill to the floor if need be”

Could you imagine having to engage in a little light DIY on your wedding day!

Anna’s advice…put a rubber band around your SD case so it doesn’t click open on accident!

Kelly, Erik and Anna took a walk into the Honduran jungle for some beautiful, jaw dropping couple shots. Despite the blaring heat and after being eaten alive by mosquitos, Erik took Kelly’s hand and said “we have jungle photos, baby”. I mean, total goals right there.

Each wedding you work on as a supplier has it’s challenges and it’s lessons, and Kelly and Erik’s wedding was no different for Anna..

“I learned what to look for in an ideal couple. In the creative world, we are always painting this picture of our “ideal couple”. Who would they be? What would they do? How would they act? Well, I managed to find them on my first destination wedding. Kelly and Erik treated me in the absolute best ways and I am so grateful they chose me to capture their wedding”

We’re so glad they chose you Anna, and so glad you chose Wed in The Wild to showcase such a beautiful day!

Inspired by Nature, Lasts a Lifetime…

From the bouquet and buttonhole, to the amazing half-moon installation…all of the flowers on this styled shoot are handmade.

Looking at the featured images, would you guess that none of flowers and vines are real? Nope, neither did we. But they are all artificial! From the bouquet and buttonhole, to the amazing half-moon installation…all of the flowers on this styled shoot are handmade.

Emily, of Faux Bloom, submitted this beautiful, dreamy shoot which showcases her amazing work. Artificial flowers have improved not only in the quality but in the artistry & materials used, and Emily’s aim for this shoot was to prove just how beautiful artificial flowers can look.

Faux Bloom-67

Faux Bloom-74

Faux Bloom-60

Emily explains that her clients choose faux for many different reasons; allergies, destination weddings & the fact that they can be prepared weeks in advance. However for the majority of couples, it’s because they want floral glamour & unique creations without the price tag.

“Large arrangements/ displays made with fresh flowers would understandably be a blow to even a healthy budget. Our hire options gives our clients choice & the chance to be really creative styling their chosen venue”.

Faux Bloom-29

Faux Bloom-35

Faux Bloom-48

Faux Bloom-62

For this shoot, Emily wanted to use only local suppliers, creating a new network of wedding industry professionals within our area.

“Client satisfaction is everything & I really enjoy being able to pass on company details that I trust to provide a great service.”

We couldn’t agree more…networking is massively important!

We asked Emily what the challenges were behind this shoot…we only ever see the perfect, finished images. But every shoot has its challenges…

‘We relied on the weather, and there was no plan b for this one! We had torrential rain the day before & also the day after but thankfully it was a glorious afternoon which gave way to a perfect sunset for the shoot.”

Faux Bloom-49

Faux Bloom-45

Faux Bloom-26

‘Inspired by nature, lasts a lifetime’…those words certainly ring true. If you are looking for beautiful flowers for your wedding, but are working to a smaller flower budget, then artificial flowers are a great compromise…especially when they look this good.

And to leave you with a parting comment…Emily’s favourite aspect of the shoot was…

“the relaxed & friendly atmosphere from start to finish. So many talented people behind the scenes worked extremely hard making this shoot a success.”
